Tennessee Science Teacher Wins National "Vision of Science" Award

Sacramento CA, March 22, 2007 – Local resident Jason Robinson, a science teacher at Cleveland’s Ocoee Middle School, is the 2007 winner of the "VSP Vision of Science" award sponsored by VSP Vision Care, the nation’s largest eyecare benefits provider with 48 million members, and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA).

Robinson will be honored in St. Louis at the NSTA National Conference Awards Banquet on March 30, 2007 and awarded $2,500 and a one-year NSTA membership. Additionally, Ocoee Middle School will receive a check for $3,000 for the study, teaching and learning of vision and health.

In 2005 Robinson created the “Vision of Excellence” program to help students learn about the eye and the importance of proper eyecare.  Since that time the program has expanded to impact over 700 students each year, as well as the larger community through multiple Family Science Nights, school presentations, and a yearly Science Camp which takes place each summer on the campus of Lee University.

“I am greatly appreciative of the opportunity that VSP has given to me to continue impacting the lives of students through the world of science.  The award will be used to continue this pursuit of excellence in the classroom, school and community,” says Robinson.

“The purpose of this award is to encourage the teaching of eye health through innovative classroom programs,” said Pat McNeil, VSP spokesperson.  “Mr. Robinson’s hands-on vision education program is a model for educators across the country to duplicate.” The annual award recognizes a K-8 classroom science teacher who has developed a creative, innovative science lesson that increases the understanding of eye health and vision.
